Introducing #HumansOfBigBazaar Story of Mr. Ashoka Acharya from Big Bazaar Udupi store.
My name is Ashoka Acharya and one New Year's Eve, me and my friends made a decision that would change it all and set us on a new path.
I was born and raised in Karkala, a small village known for its cultural richness and diversity. I come from a middle-class family-- my father, a homemaker mother, two younger brothers, and me. After finishing my graduation in Karkala, I moved to Udupi for employment opportunities. In 2018, I joined Big Bazaar as an Assistant Department Manager.
I am the founder and president of a social service group in Udupi that celebrates special days by making efforts to contribute to society. As part of my vision, I formed a group named Karavali Youth Club in 2016. The group aims to make youths understand that they have a responsibility towards society and inspire them to do their best.
It was New Year’s Eve of 2015 as we were making plans to step out and enjoy ourselves the way everyone else does. But something sparked in our mind and we decided we did not want to spend this NYE conventionally. We decided to do something meaningful. We wanted to give back to society and make a difference where it’s needed most. So, we visited our district hospital and distributed fruits and bread to patients. Because of the response we received from social media and the public, we decided to do more.
On Valentine's day, 2016, I just knew that there are people who won’t be getting what they want from their loved ones. We wanted to give them something and make sure that no one regrets not receiving love on this day. So, we went to an old age home and spent our time there for the entire day. We listened to their stories, took photographs with them, and made sure that everyone had fun even though it was the day of love.
